The stocking rate on the farm, including the area in crop, had been reduced to 1.3 cows/ha. Extra feed had to be bought to fill the gap until the crops were available for grazing. Macdonald said having quarter of the farm in crops at once meant a big area was not available to the herd. The aim of the trial was to produce high value feeds that would lead to a productivity gain through increased intake and better feed quality. Macdonald said growing crops on the dairy platform required a high degree of agronomic and management skills if their potential was to be realised. Cow condition score was 4.7, compared with 4.4 last season. Daily milksolids production per hectare was 6.53kg (5.16kg) and per- cow production for the season to date was 60kg (49kg).
